Auto insurance: Roadside assistance

July 12th, 2010

Like many things to do with motoring roadside assistance can be a matter of personal choice or experience. However, in order to judge how effective they are, there is one or two things you can do.

Read carefully through what the various organisations are offering, This is for comparitive purposes, and so that you can judge which is going to provide the most suitable service for you.

Read the small print carefully. For example, I know of one in the UK that provides for breakdown to home recovery. However you have to read the small print to find out that this provision only works if you are within 10 miles of home. Any further than that and you have to pay normal recovery rates.

Normally these operators will offer a number of different standards of service contracts. Make sure you choose the one that suits you. For example, if you do a lot of long distance travelling, which might include overnights, make sure that it provides for either accommodation if they cannot get you and the car home, or other form of transport to get you home.

Beware of overseas coverage. This is particularly a problem in Europe. I had international roadside assistance for travelling through France and Spain, only to find out when I needed to use it that the French motorway operators do not allow private roadside assistance companies to access their motorways. You have to get off the motorway first, and pay for the French to get you off.

Finally, you should always ask others, and your local consumers association, about the standard of service that has been received from the various operators. Recommendation is the best data to base your choice on.

How to choose an auto insurance broker – Part 3

April 7th, 2010

When choosing an insurance broker for your automobile insurance, you will find it helpful to find an agent that knows you and your family well. Also, you should know the agent well. It should be someone that is trustworthy and has a good business relationship with trusted individuals in your community.

If you are new to a community, ask your work associates who they use and why they use them. Also ask your fellow civic club members, neighbors, and church associates. You will probably find right away that there is one or two agents that the majority of people use. This is especially so if you live in a small town.

Go and meet the agent personally and ask him what he has to offer. Mention the people who recommended him so that you have some common point of reference.

A lot of insurance companies have big boasts about low premiums. But in the long run, a personal agent who knows you and your needs may be able to offer you the same options at an affordable, if not cheaper, rate.

It is good if your insurance agent is in the town where you live so that you can go and sit across the desk from him to review your policy periodically. But, with the technological advantages that we have now, that may not be necessary. However, you should feel free to pick up the phone and call your agent at any time. He or she must be assessable to you. If the agent always seems out of pocket and unable to speak to you directly about the mundane issues, then how can you be sure he will be there when you need him in a crisis?

When you find a good agent, keep him! Don’t jump here and there seeking something better. If you are struggling with your insurance premium, go talk to your agent. He may be able to offer you some advice that could save you some money or give you the additional coverage that you need.

The trust element is vitally important between you and your agent. If you see a policy advertised somewhere that is cheaper, take it to him and ask him if he can match it. He will probably tell you that there is a reason that it is cheaper. You should be able to respect his advice. If not, you could end up switching companies and find that the cheaper insurance doesn’t give the coverage that your previous policy offered. The sad thing is that you will probably not discover that until it is time to make a claim. Then it will be you who loses.

We have all heard the old saying that “you get what you pay for”. Well, automobile insurance is no exception. We would all be wise to have a personal agent who we know and respect to go over our policies with us carefully to make sure we have the coverage we need.

Auto insurance: Windshield replacement coverage

February 24th, 2010

You’re driving down the highway minding your own business when it happens. You may see it, or you may not. You will almost always hear it. Someone in front of you drives over a small rock. The friction from the tire lifts the rock from the road surface and hurls it at your car.

Most of the time, it hits your grille or bumper and bounces harmlessly off to who knows where. It didn’t happen that way this time. The rock came blasting straight for your windshield. You hear the pop. The mark on the glass is obvious. Before you can get to a shop to repair the blemish, a crack starts meandering its way across your windshield. Now, it’s official. A new windshield must be installed.

Nikon D5000 HDR test

When you get home, you fish around in the glove compartment and find the insurance card. You have comprehensive insurance on your policy so a new windshield is included in your coverage. You may have a deductible or maybe not. Most companies today will give you a windshield without you having to pay the deductible. You will need to either call a claim number on the card or call your agent depending on your company’s requirements.

They will ask you about where and when the event occurred. Many times they will want to know if you got the information about what vehicle flung the rock into your windshield. This is usually to determine if a truck was driving in violation of the tire flap laws. Almost no trucks go without flaps.

Next, they will ask about where the car will be located for the installation or would you prefer to take it to a shop. I always choose to have the replacement done on site. A date and approximate time will be set up. As a rule, the glass company will contact you before arriving to do the work. This gives you a more precise time to look for them. It also gives their worker a better idea of how to locate your vehicle.

They prefer to have the car unlocked, but they can usually do the work without it. The installer will remove your old glass and use a high grade of adhesive to glue your new windshield into place. He will then replace the trim and wipe you new glass clean of finger prints and smudges.

Last, he will replace your rear view mirror. If your car has state or locality stickers, he will try to remove them and apply them to the new windshield. If this isn’t possible, then, he will give you the small piece of glass with the sticker attached.

Some companies want you to sign off that the job was completed while others will just deal directly with the insurance company. Before he leaves, make certain that you have a written copy of the warranty on the craftsmanship of the work in case the new seals leak.

Choosing an Auto GPS System

January 13th, 2010

Do you travel a lot? Have you found yourself wishing you had a better way of finding your destination instead of using old fashion paper maps? If so, then you need an Auto GPS System. If you dont know a lot about these devices, then you should know that they are the most modern way to find your way away. They can tell you exactly how to reach your destination by giving you precise directions. These directions are so advanced that it can even tell you when you need to make a turn and in which direction you are traveling. Choosing an Auto GPS System that is right for you will depend on how you plan on using the system.

So how does the Auto GPS System work? You begin by programming in a destination and this information is sent to certain satellites. The satellites will determine your exact current position. Once this has been determined they will locate the destination that you put in. From here the system will give you directions to your destination by using both latitude and longitude. Many times these devices will give you more than one route that will take you to your destination. One of these will be the shortest route while another may be all interstate traveling and so forth. You will then be able to choose the route that you want to use.

The Beast

When you decide to buy a GPS navigation system you will find that you have a lot of choices. Which one you buy will depend on different things. For instance, do you plan on using this system occasionally when you take a vacation or need to visit somewhere new? If this is the case, then you may only want to buy a small compact system that can be stored in your glove compartment. You plug this type into your cigarette lighter when you want to use it. On the downside these may not be as easy to use as other models. Some Auto GPS Systems can be attached to your dashboard or some other place in your ride. These have a lot more features and are a quite bit larger which means that they may not be suited for all rides.

Choosing Auto GPS Systems will also include finding one with the features you want to use. For instance, if you plan on doing a lot of traveling then you may want one that provides you with the current position of ATMs, banks, airports and bus stations. You can have different ways of programming the destination that you want to find and you can buy systems that are voice activated. Just take a little time to decide how you want to use your system and how often you plan on using it. You will then be able to choose the best one for your needs.

Auto insurance: Money

Auto insurance: Money-saving strategies

Choosing an auto insurance plan can be quite daunting, especially when you are on a tight budget. Here are some tips to help you save money on your plan.

Shop around:

Be sure to search for competitive quotes on your auto insurance. Start out be searching online on an insurance quote website to give you an idea of what different companies will charge you. You may need to contact some of the insurance agents directly to get an accurate quote (particularly for companies like State Farm that deals with local agents). You can also get some quotes directly from websites like Geico, Esurance, and Progressive. Choose a high-quality, low-cost insurance plan.

Check for all the possible discounts:

Good record or credit discounts: If you have a clean driving record and a strong credit score, you will be able to get a reduction in your insurance cost. This is extra motivation to always be a safe driver on the road, in order to have a clean record, and to also keep it up-to-date.

Multiple car discounts: Most insurance companies offer special discounts if you insure more than one car. In fact, insuring two cars can sometimes end up being the same cost as insuring only one.

Company or organization discounts: Check with your work to see whether they offer car insurance discounts. In addition, many groups, such as credit card companies, fraternities, trade groups, and professional organizations etc., offer special cost reductions.

Theft devices and safety equipment: Many cars have theft devices, antilock brakes, airbags, automatic seatbelts, and other safety equipment installed. Be sure to check whether your current car or new car has any of these items installed, because this can reduce your insurance cost.

Low-risk occupation discounts: Some insurance agencies offer discounts for certain professions that are considered to be “lower risk.” These occupations can vary from company to company, so be sure to inquire to see if your profession is on the low-risk list at each insurance company you are considering.

Senior citizen discounts: If you are a senior, make sure you receive a discount for this on your insurance.

Reduce your coverage or incease your deductible:

The most obvious way to reduce your insurance costs is to lower your coverage. If you reduce your comprehensive and collision coverage you can dramatically reduce your cost. If you increase your deductible from the common $500 to $1000, you will see a large reduction in your monthly premium, while still be covered for serious accidents.

How to find the right auto body repair shop

December 20th, 2009

I have been involved in Smash Repairs and Body shops in Australia for over 20 years, I also worked for 10 years with two different Insurance Companies. The facts you need to know:-

Firstly: If you are involved in an accident and your car has to be towed from the road, do not let the towing company tell you where they will tow your vehicle to, it is important that you contact your insurance company prior to the towing company picking up your car and towing it. Towing companies are paid royalties to take vehicle to certain panel shops, and you certainly don’t need your vehicle towed to some backyard panel shop that has to pay towing companies for work.

Playing with the DOF

Secondly: You are not required to obtain more than ONE quotation for repairs if you are insured, however, if you are not insured and you require a third party to pay for repairs to your vehicle, it is recommended that you get 2 or more quotes in case legal action is required. If you are insured Insurance companies may make you feel like you must run around town and get at least 2 or 3 or even more quotations, but you only require ONE, so it is best to get a few recommendations from friends, family etc., before choosing which repairer best suits you.

Thirdly: You may obtain a quotation from any panel shop anywhere of your choice, you are not obliged to use the Insurance companies suggested smash repairer. However, it is recommended for your guarantee of workmanship, otherwise most Insurance Companies will pay you out an agreed amount for repairs if you choose a repairer they do not recommend for warranty reasons. If you are not insured, another way of choosing the right panel shop is to get a list of repairers that the leading insurance companies recommend, and visit those first, often if a panel shop is recommended to a wide range of larger insurance companies, then they are surely recommended as a quality business with the highest standard of workmanship. Insurance companies choose very carefully what panel shops they use for repairs, as they also require the highest quality of workmanship, REMEMBER the Smash Repairs customer is also the Insurance Companies customer.

Fourthly: Have a look around the smash repair shop you have chosen to repair your vehicle, check they have a clean spray booth and paint shop. Ask how much experience there staff have had and if the panel shop itself holds there own guarantee of workmanship as well as your insurance company. If you are not insured you will require

How to choose an auto body repair shop – Part 6

September 11th, 2009

Auto body repair shops are listed in the yellow pages by the hundreds! They all claim to give A+ work for a fair price. Some says they are the cheapest price in town. Trying to find who is really the on for you can be daunting, but with a little patience, and asking alot of questions, you can get the quality and price that is right for you.

The first thing I noticed when I was researching was that not all auto body repair shops are equal. Some specialize in classic restorations, some do “budget” quickie jobs, others focus on modern vehicles after accidents, yet they all claim they can do it all.

Your first step is to ask, ask and ask some more. I started with my regular mechanic, asking who they recommend. I asked people everywhere I went who gave my fender the “that poor beautiful truck” look. I asked my neighbors, the check-out lady at the grocery store, and parents at the soccer field. I even called people who I knew had work done over the years.

February Dawn

The questions I put to them included:

-how much did it cost?

-was it for a replacement or fixing the old part?

-did they finish on time?

-was your car returned in a clean condition?

-do they keep the car in a secure area after hours? During foul weather?

-after time, where you still satisfied with the result?

-if a problem came up, did they stand by their work and correct the problem without a fuss?

After all the quizzing, I actually only had two shops people referred to alot. Out of the hundreds, these two stood out as winners. I visited the shops, and even just standing in the lobby, I looked at the pictures on the walls of “projects” they had done. Most shops display their best work as badges of honor. Knowing that only the cream of the crop get displayed, I asked if I could see some repairs in progress, and they let me wander around the shop freely. That was a big clue that they are sure their work is flawless! Plus, while standing there, I openly listened while they spoke on the telephone to other clients, vendors, insurance carriers. How they were treating them gave me a clue on how I would be treated.

Once again, the questions! I asked all the previous to them, but expanded on the repairs they suggested for my truck. Why is repair better than replacing? What is the difference in cost, and expected quality? Is payment due by myself or will they file with insurance carrier? What happens if they are not able to do the repairs as they expect due to lack of parts available? Or if repairs are made but don’t look so well? If I have my car back for a month, six months, etc and the paint starts to bubble, or peel, what then? Do they offer me a ride home after drop off, at pick up?

I asked both shops the same questions, and really the final decider for me was the quality, and honesty I perceived in their answers. Being a girl trying to find the answers and respect in what is traditionally a “boys world”, I used every resource I could find to educate myself on the process. Since my repairs were done, I have been very pleased with my truck. My husband would have never known I crashed his fender on his truck if I hadn’t already told him!
